Gary Gensler, the chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), was confronted on Tuesday about his role in the payment of Fusion GPS, the firm that produced the discredited Steele dossier.
Gensler was testifying before the House Financial Services Committee when Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) asked him about the payment.
“Did you know that the Hillary Clinton campaign and the Democratic National Committee paid Fusion GPS to produce the Steele dossier?” Jordan asked.
Gensler responded that he was aware of the payment.
“I was aware that there was a payment made,” Gensler said. “I don’t know the details of the payment.”
Jordan then asked Gensler if he was concerned about the conflict of interest that arose from the payment.
“Are you concerned that the Clinton campaign and the DNC paid Fusion GPS to produce the Steele dossier, which was then used by the FBI to obtain a warrant to spy on the Trump campaign?” Jordan asked.
Gensler said that he was not concerned about the conflict of interest.
“I don’t think there’s a conflict of interest,” Gensler said. “The FBI is an independent agency.”
Jordan then asked Gensler if he would recuse himself from any investigation into the Steele dossier.
“Would you recuse yourself from any investigation into the Steele dossier?” Jordan asked.
Gensler said that he would not recuse himself.
“I don’t think there’s any reason for me to recuse myself,” Gensler said.
Jordan’s questions to Gensler highlighted the growing controversy over the Steele dossier. The dossier was a collection of unverified intelligence reports that alleged that Donald Trump had ties to Russia. The dossier was used by the FBI to obtain a warrant to spy on the Trump campaign during the 2016 election.
The dossier has been widely discredited. The FBI has admitted that it did not verify the information in the dossier before using it to obtain a warrant. The dossier’s author, Christopher Steele, has been accused of bias against Trump.
The payment of Fusion GPS by the Clinton campaign and the DNC has raised further questions about the dossier. It is unclear whether the Clinton campaign and the DNC knew that the dossier was unverified when they paid for it. It is also unclear whether the Clinton campaign and the DNC knew that the dossier would be used by the FBI to obtain a warrant to spy on the Trump campaign.
Gensler’s refusal to recuse himself from any investigation into the Steele dossier is a sign that the Biden administration is not interested in getting to the bottom of the matter. The Biden administration is more interested in protecting the Clinton campaign and the DNC from any scrutiny.
